Alaska reported its first (known) fatality from Alaskapox which is an orthopoxvirus that causes skin lesions. This disease was initially identified in 2015, mainly in the Fairbanks area and is transmitted from small animals like shrews to humans. While there have been 7 known Alaskapox cases since 2015, officials suspect more undetected cases may exist!
